Did You Know? Black Plastics are Unrecyclable

Sorting Machines can't see the black plastics. The Township has single sort recycling which means you put most of your recyclable packaging into just one bin for glass, plastic, paper and more. At the recycling plant, all different types and colors of materials must be separated. Plastics are normally sorted by machines that use light that is invisible to the human eye to 'see' the different colors. Unfortunately the dye that is most often used to color black plastic is not seen by these machines. These black plastics end up in the leftover stream of unsorted materials and winds up in landfills by accident. For this reason black plastic is unable to be recycled by Republic Services our contracted trash and recycling hauler.
